El ejército lanzó una vigorosa ofensiva contra los rebeldes en tanto el Gobierno propuso varias leyes de amnistía para aquellos que aceptaran entregar las armas.
La insurgencia en Argelia comenzó en 1992, luego que el ejército canceló elecciones legislativas que un partido islámico parecía en condiciones de ganar.
Un automóvil incinerado se hallaba en la calle, a unos 30 metros de las puertas del edificio, una torre blanca de apartamentos donde también se halla el ministerio del Interior.
Testigos dijeron que vieron un automóvil de color rojo enfilar hacia el edificio del Gobierno. La policía abrió fuego para obligar al conductor a frenar el vehículo, y luego, el vehículo estalló. Esas versiones no fueron inicialmente corroboradas por las autoridades.
Los ataques fueron un devastador revés para el Gobierno argelino, que ha intentado reconstruir el país luego que una insurgencia islámica causó la muerte de 200 mil personas. Tras varios años de calma relativa, un grupo vinculado a la red terrorista Al Qaeda comenzó a lanzar ataques, pero de envergadura menor
Parte de seis pisos del edificio del Gobierno fueron arrancados de cuajo por la explosión.
El canal árabe de televisión Al Jazeera dijo que había recibido un comunicado del grupo Al Qaeda en el Norte de África atribuyéndose los atentados y afirmando que utilizó tres atacantes suicidas.
El primer ministro Abdelaziz Belkhadem calificó el ataque de "acto criminal terrorista y cobarde".
Una bomba cerca de la oficina del primer ministro y otra en una estación policial mataron a 24 personas y dejaron heridas a 222 en la capital de Argelia.
