Regresará a la Tierra el 24 de octubre en una cápsula Soyuz con los cosmonautas Oleg Kononenko y Sergei Volkov, cuyo padre Alexander también viajó al espacio.
Garriott pasará 10 días realizando experimentos.
Garriott también tomará fotografías de la tierra para medir cambios desde que su padre sacó fotos a bordo de la estación espacial estadounidense Skylab en 1973.
La nave Soyuz TMA-13, con el estadounidense Richard Garriott y otros dos tripulantes, junto con las secuencias digitalizadas del ADN de algunos de los cerebros más famosos del mundo, fue lanzada al espacio desde el cosmódromo de Baikonur en la estepa kazaja.
'Me siento encantado, encantado'', dijo Owen Garriott, padre de Richard, un ex astronauta estadounidense, quien es el primer norteamericano en ver que su hijo sigue sus pasos. ''Están en órbita, eso es bueno'', añadió.
El Soyuz debe acoplarse a la estación internacional espacial.
El padre de Garriott, Owen, realizó dos viajes espaciales como astronauta estadounidense en las décadas del setenta y del ochenta.
Garriott, un multimillonario de 47 años oriundo de Texas, que diseña juegos de computadora llegó al espacio, cumpliendo un sueño de la infancia que comenzó con el vuelo de su padre, que era astronauta.
Además de Garriott, a bordo viajan el astronauta estadounidense Michael Fincke y el cosmonauta ruso Yuri Lonchakov.
Garriott es el primer estadounidense que sigue a su padre al espacio.
El cohete con una cápsula Soyuz en la que viajan los tres astronautas fue lanzado a las 13:01 hora local, desde una plataforma en la instalación de Baikonur. El navío ingresó en órbita unos 10 minutos más tarde.
Garriott tuvo que desembolsar unos 30 millones de dólares para convertirse en el sexto turista espacial que viaja a la plataforma orbital.
Dos estadounidenses, entre ellos el turista millonario estadounidense Richard Garriott, y un ruso despegaron desde una plataforma espacial en Kazajstán para un viaje de dos días a la estación espacial internacional.
