Tranquility se unirá a los otros módulos que están en pleno funcionamiento en la estación espacial, entre ellos el laboratorio científico Destiny, el compartimiento Quest y los módulos Unity y Harmony.
La construcción de la EEI, que costará 100 mil millones de dólares, deberá quedar concluida en un 90 por ciento antes de que se produzca el retiro de los transbordadores.
El módulo Tranquility, construido por Italia, y la cúpula son una contribución de la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA) cuyos miembros forman parte del consorcio internacional que integran 16 países para la construcción de la EEI.
El Endeavour permanecerá dos días en órbita terrestre antes de dirigirse hacia su acoplamiento con el complejo que gira en una órbita a casi 400 kilómetros sobre la Tierra.
El presidente de EU., Barack Obama, anunció hace unos días un recorte del programa espacial, en un intento de reducir el enorme déficit presupuestario del país.
A partir del 2010, el avituallamiento de la EEI se realizará a través de las naves Soyuz de Rusia.
Esta es la trigésimo cuarta ocasión en que un transbordador parte de noche y también la última.
Comandado por George Zamka, un astronauta de origen colombiano, el Endeavour despegó desde el Centro Espacial Kennedy, en Cabo Cañaveral, en Florida.
Para la instalación del 'Tranquility' se realizarán tres paseos espaciales de seis horas y media cada uno.
El objetivo de la misión es la instalación del módulo 'Tranquility', que ampliará el espacio de trabajo de los astronautas, y de una cúpula que permitirá una vista panorámica de la Tierra
El director del lanzamiento del Endeavour calificó la salida del aparato como una "de las más tranquilas" en la historia de la NASA.
El Endeavour partió hacia la Estación Espacial Internacional dejando tras de sí una estela luminosa en medio de la noche, una imagen que hizo historia ya que no hay previstos más vuelos nocturnos de un transbordador.
