Celebran aniversario de nacimiento de Buda

Los fieles esperan al día de luna llena del sexto mes lunar del calendario indio, Vesak, para celebrar esta festividad, que conmemora a la vez tres acontecimientos; el nacimiento, la iluminación, y la muerte o "paso al parinirvana" (hace 2,555 años), del príncipe Siddartha Gautama, más conocido como Buda.
Devotos budistas encienden velas frente a la gran estatua de Buda del sagrado lugar de Buddhamonthon, en Tailandia.
El budismo cuenta hoy con 330 millones de seguidores, sobre todo en el sureste asiático, China, Japón y otros países de la región, y continúa atrayendo a famosos en Occidente, como el actor Richard Gere, el compositor Leonard Cohen o el empresario Steve Jobs. EFE/M.A.PUSHPA KUMARA
La celebración tiene una tradición de siglos, aunque la decisión de señalar la conmemoración se formalizó por primera vez en el año 1950, durante una cumbre de la Conferencia de la Comunidad Mundial de Budistas celebrada en Sri Lanka.
Aunque sin participación del dalái lama ni sus seguidores -que se guían por otro calendario-, los budistas indios rodearon de flores, velas, y banderolas las estatuas de Buda erigidas en el lugar, y hubo templos que organizaron actos, oraciones y bendiciones.
Frente a la higuera de la ciudad de Bodhgaya, probable descendiente directa del árbol que acogió entonces a Buda, varios miles de fieles de esta religión milenaria elevaron oraciones en presencia de representantes de Tailandia, Sri Lanka y Myanmar.
Sencillas ceremonias sirvieron a miles de budistas de la India para celebrar los 2,600 años de la "iluminación", o momento en que Buda alcanzó la "plenitud espiritual", bajo una higuera del norte de este país.
