No hubo, por tanto, oportunidad de refrescarse con botellas de cava, con las que habitualmente se rociaban entre ellos los asistentes, que tuvieron que conformarse con grandes vasos de plástico con vino.
A partir de este jueves, por las estrechas calles del casco histórico de la ciudad, cientos de "mozos" correrán delante de seis astados en un tramo de unos 800 metros, los que separan los corrales de Santo Domingo del coso taurino, donde las reses serán lidiadas horas después.
Las mañanas del 7 al 14 de julio se realizarán los encierros, principal imagen de estas fiestas, inmortalizadas por el escritor estadounidense Ernest Hemingway, que las dio a conocer al mundo en la primera mitad del siglo pasado y de las que se volvió un apasionado espectador.
Al lanzarse el chupinazo, las miles de personas que abarrotaron la plaza, todas vestidos de blanco, alzaron como cada año los pañuelos, en una estampa de júbilo que desde ese punto se comienza a extender por toda la ciudad.
A partir del chupinazo quedan más de siete días en los que se realizarán unas 520 actividades, desde religiosas, culturales, artísticas y populares, pero principalmente lo más esperado son los encierros, que cada mañana cruzan el centro de Pamplona hasta la plaza de toros.

).- El alcalde de Pamplona, Enrique Maya, lanzó hoy el tradicional chupinazo, con el que iniciaron las fiestas de San Fermín en esa ciudad del norte de España, que se prolongarán hasta el próximo 14 de julio.
Ante miles de personas reunidas en la plaza consistorial, el primer edil prendió la mecha del cohete (chupinazo) que al tronar anuncia el inicio de la semana de fiesta, y antes de hacerlo gritó las palabras de convocatoria: 'íPamploneses, pamplonesas. Viva San Fermín. Gora San Fermín'.
