El servicio telefónico 911 recibió en un par de horas 12 mil 953 llamadas de auxilio, y más de 78 mil personas en el área de Chicago.
En el área triestatal, de los estados de Nueva York, Nueva Jersey y Connecticut, se registró agua nieve, granizo y lluvia, que combinada con las bajas temperaturas creó condiciones peligrosas en las carreteras y autopistas.
Cerca de un tercio de la población estadunidense se ve afectada por la tormenta invernal que ha dejado un intenso frío, grandes acumulaciones de nieve, así como cortes en el servicio eléctrico y miles de cancelaciones de vuelos.
El gobierno federal ha enviado a estados como Oklahoma e Illinos personal de la Guardia Nacional para apoyar a los afectados por las inclemencias del tiempo.
El Centro Nacional de Meteorología emitió una alerta de nieve y heladas que afectarón a 30 estados de la nación.
Estadounidenses sufrían la inclemencia del tiempo.
Las autoridades de la ciudad de Chicago han suspendido las clases, algo que no se producía desde 1999.
Un autobús público, que se atascó por la nieve, sirvió de refugio para varios automovilistas que quedaron atrapados por la tormenta durante cinco horas, antes de ser rescatados, pero los vehículos abandonados resultaron un obstáculo para reabrir la avenida.
Decenas de vehículos quedaron atrapados entre la nieve.
Los termómetros en la 'ciudad del viento" registraron máximas de 18 grados bajo cero, señaló Laura Furgione, directora del Servicio Nacional del Meteorología.
Chicago ha sido la ciudad donde la "tormenta monstruosa", como ya la han bautizado los medios locales, ha golpeado con mayor intensidad.
Las tormentas de nieve y hielo obligaron a cancelar más de seis mil vuelos en buena parte de Estados Unidos.
